The SPOI Fundation

About

The SPOI Foundation is a continuation of the work carried out by the SPOI over nearly 30 years. It gives a high profile to the challenges faced by the scientific and medical community in the field of pulmonology in the Indian Ocean. Its role is to raise awareness and pool resources in order to provide efficient and sustainable solutions for the people of the Indian Ocean.

The strength of the SPOI Foundation lies in its seasoned local expertise, combined with a range of strategic partnerships. Its status as a Sheltered Foundation, under the aegis of the Fondation de l’Académie Nationale de Médecine, reflects a shared aspiration to promote cutting-edge knowledge through training and medical cooperation. At the crossroads of cooperation and innovation, the SPOI Foundation’s ambition is to become an influential player in access to care in the field of pneumology in the Indian Ocean.

Projects

Our involvement

Over the last decade, interventional pulmonology has emerged as a field of growing importance. It is the site of increasingly non-invasive procedures, which are now preferred to major surgical procedures. Faster, cheaper and less painful, interventional lung procedures require shorter hospital stays. Patients also have shorter recovery times than with conventional surgical procedures.

On the eve of 2024, most Indian Ocean countries are still lagging behind in the field of interventional pulmonology. Due to a lack of equipment and expertise, patients requiring this type of care are transferred – where possible – outside the Indian Ocean (Middle East, Europe, India, Sri Lanka) for treatment.

Although this procedure is the result of benevolent government intentions, it remains an inappropriate solution, given the heavy implications for patients, their families and the inherent budgets…

The SPOI is launching the “Indian Ocean Interventional Bronchoscopy” project with the aim of promoting access to this care for the entire Indo-Oceanic population. The aim of this project is twofold: on the one hand, to introduce a fully operational service for advanced bronchoscopic and thoracoscopic procedures on each of the islands in the south-west Indian Ocean, and on the other, to promote the training of local experts capable of making an active contribution to innovation and international cooperation in the field of interventional pneumology.

VISION

Our ESG commitment

Social impact is at the very heart of the Foundation’s missions, whether in terms of access to healthcare, training, international cooperation or promoting local know-how.

A commitment to the environment and society is also part of the Foundation’s DNA, and has been since its inception. The Foundation has set up an ESG (Environment, Social & Governance) council that is familiar with the standards in each of the areas involved in our activities (health, pharmaceuticals, carbon footprint, diversity, mental health, etc.) to ensure compliance with the regulations in force. We are committed to ensuring that the well-being of patients is part of a wider framework of respect for people and their environment.
